STEP #1: LECTIO / READ
Jesus took Peter, John, and James
and went up a mountain to pray.
While he was praying his face changed in appearance
and his clothing became dazzling white.
And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,
who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus
that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep,
but becoming fully awake,
they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus,
“Master, it is good that we are here;
let us make three tents,
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
But he did not know what he was saying.
While he was still speaking,
a cloud came and cast a shadow over them,
and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.
Then from the cloud came a voice that said,
“This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”
After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.
They fell silent and did not at that time
tell anyone what they had seen.
STEP #2: MEDITATIO / MEDITATE
FOMO. It is a fear that plagues my life every day. (That is fear of missing out, for anyone not in the know.) I am always worried about not knowing what is going on. I hate sitting at home. I will run around and get very little sleep just to make sure I can get to everything possible. What if someone else is hanging out without me? Why didn’t my friends invite me when I see their pictures on Instagram? Maybe if I party hop and go with these friends for 30 minutes then go spend 30 minutes with my other friends I can do everything. I make myself over busy, and it is hard for me to commit to anything.
But what happens when I let my fear of missing out take over? I actually miss things. I am not actually fully present. I run around in circles so much that I am not actually there. I miss the little joys that are right in front of me. I miss the important moments that my friends and family want to share with me.
Peter, James and John almost missed out on one of the biggest moments of their lives in our Gospel today. They fell asleep. (They seem to have a tendency to do that at all of the big moments.) They almost missed seeing Jesus with Moses and Elijah. I bet they are glad they woke up.
Today’s Gospel should be a wake up call for all of us. What is keeping us from being fully present? Is it a fear of missing out? Is it binge watching Netflix? Is it being glued to our phones? Is it spending too much time in Snapchat?
Put yourself on that mountain. What would prevent you from seeing Jesus with Elijah and Moses? What would you want to be doing? How would you want to see Jesus?
Let’s step away from whatever is holding us back. Today, I challenge you to be fully present. To look at every experience to find the good. Look and see where you can find Christ present with you today.
STEP #3: ORATIO / PRAY
Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
When am I not fully present?
What do I let separate myself from God and others?
How do I want to see Christ in my life?
STEP #4: CONTEMPLATIO / CONTEMPLATE
"I am present."
"God, I want to see you."
FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAY...
Put down whatever is keeping you distracted. Is it your phone? Instagram? Sign out for the rest of the day and be present where you are.
