Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
During my college days, I was a member of the Catholic Student Union. Part of our evangelization effort included going door to door in the residence halls and meeting with students who visited one of our events. I didn’t realize it at the time, but just being a friendly face, was one of the most effective ways to bring people closer to Christ. It wasn’t until later that I overheard someone say they kept coming back to CSU events because of the people who visited her door.
Like the sower’s seeds, we all have our different paths to God. Some walk through rocky ground. Others go through prickly thorns. Unfortunately, the distractions get the best of them. Then, there’s the rest of us who land in the rich soil. That “soil” is all of us who survived our own trials and tribulations to reach our hands to others seeking a better relationship with Christ. You know, the friendly faces who go door to door!
Next time, you meet someone, whether it’s at church, work, or your neighborhood, do your best to be a friendly face. You never know how much it can change someone’s life.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Who has been a friendly face to me? Who first really made me feel welcome in the Church?
Who am I walking with on their path to God? How am I leading them as a disciple of Christ?
How can I be more friendly and welcoming to the people I encounter at church, school, work, or out in my community?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Lord, you bring me joy."
"Help me spread joy wherever I go."
"Be a light."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Make an effort to smile as you pass someone today, whether in the hallway at school or at work or the grocery store.
