STEP #1: LECTIO / READ
Today's Reading is the Gospel, and can be found in:
Click here to read it on the USCCB's website.
*Please note this change in how we give the reading. We will now be telling you where it is as well as providing the link to read online. This is in order to be sure we have the proper permissions for everything we are sharing as well as make things as easy as possible for you.**
STEP #2: MEDITATIO / MEDITATE
In the Gospel reading today, Jesus tells the parable of the virgins waiting to meet the bridegroom. The last line always reminds me of a hymn I used to sing in grade school: “Stay Awake! Be Ready!”
As I read the Gospel, the question popped into my head: what does it mean to be spiritually awake?
Obviously, we physically have to sleep; our bodies need it to survive. But we can be spiritually asleep, while physically awake. What does it mean to be spiritually awake? I believe it means, making yourself aware of what God is doing around you and in your own life.
I often find myself consumed with my own life: what is happening to me today, what I have to do, who do I want to see, etc. Because of this, I can let the needs of those closest to me go out of my radar. Being spiritually awake means taking a step back and remembering that I am not the center of the universe. Each person I interact with has their own set of problems, so it’s important to help each other out. To be spiritually awake, I need to be present to those God has placed around me.
Spiritual awakeness doesn’t stop with the people around you. More importantly, being spiritually awake means being in tune to how God is working in your own life. Maybe things aren’t going so well, you’re going through a rough time or you are just really busy, and somehow prayer time doesn’t fit in your schedule. I’ve been there, done that a thousand times and feel spiritually groggy when I do. I don’t “get” as much out of prayer, but I’ve found that if I keep going, keep making the time (even when it feels like there isn’t any) to just sit with God, I am more aware of the small “God moments” throughout the day. God is always present, I am just not always awake enough to realize it.
Being spiritually awake means being able to see Christ in the person who gave you the quarter when you were short to buy a can of soda. Or when your hands were completely full and everything came tumbling down, recognizing the blessing in the person who helped you pick it all back up rather than dwelling on the mess that happened. It means seeing Christ in the person who smiled at you when you were having a bad day. But it also means being Christ to others.
It’s in the little moments when we can see God the most. We never know when they are going to happen. Are you going to be awake enough to notice them?
STEP #3: ORATIO / PRAY
How spiritually awake am I?
How can I be more in tune to what is going on around me?
How can I see more of what God is doing in my own life?
STEP #4: CONTEMPLATIO / CONTEMPLATE
"You know neither the day nor the hour."
"Lord, help me to be awake."
FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAY...
Pay attention to "God moments" that happen to you today, or opportunities to create a "God moment" in someone else's life. Each time it happens make a note of it on your phone or in your notebook. Before you go to sleep, reflect on these moments and how God was present in your life.
