Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
Back in college I had a reversion back to my Catholic faith and I desired to know how to truly live an authentic Christian Life. My answer came one Sunday through a priest giving a homily. He said, "If you want your life to change then bring Jesus with you everywhere you go. When you're driving take the papers off your passenger seat and put Christ there. When you're at work put Him at the register next to you. When you're in class imagine Him learning with you." So I began doing this; everywhere I went I would imagine Jesus with me.
I then found myself one day at my favorite restaurant with all my friends, which is of course Chipotle, the greatest food since the double-stuffed Oreo. I was there with my friends when all of a sudden one of my buddies made an inappropriate joke. To this day I can't remember the joke, but I just remembered it being really off color. I began laughing at the joke and suddenly I saw an empty seat at the table and I thought to myself, Wow, Jesus is here and I doubt He would be laughing at that joke. How would He respond? How would He be looking me for laughing at the joke. I left Chipotle that day upset realizing that I had to make some choices, so later that day I told Jesus that I will break away from those friends if He would give me new ones. So I ended some friendships and the Lord indeed brought in new ones.
I realized in that moment that my friendship with them was not Christ-centered and so I wasn't burning for Christ's love. And so we became divided. Yet years later I saw them again when I was in seminary and we caught up and had a great time. The difference was that I was now trying to live an authentic Catholic life. We talked about my life in seminary and their lives with their own faith journey that I never knew they even had. You see, relationships are possible with every person that we meet, but if our relationship isn't centered on Christ then it truly isn't something that will be fruitful. Christ desires you to burn for His love and this burning love will bring some division in your relationships, but this division is meant not to divide forever, but rather to purify and allow your relationship to based on the love of God.
So spend ten minutes today asking the Lord to set you on fire and burn away anything that is not Him-centered!
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Are the relationships in your life Christ-centered? Why or why not?
Which relationships do you think Christ might be asking you to purify or burn away? Why?
How can you let the fire of Christ's love purify everything in your life?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Purify my heart, Lord."
"Let me love like You."
"Here I am, Lord."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Strive to make your friendships Christ-centered. Do not be afraid to let some relationships fall away if they need to. You don't have to talk about Jesus all the time, but if you aren't bringing each other closer to Him, it is time to reexamine those relationships.
