Step #1: Lectio / Read
Jesus said to his disciples:
"I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.
But when he comes, the Spirit of truth,
he will guide you to all truth.
He will not speak on his own,
but he will speak what he hears,
and will declare to you the things that are coming.
He will glorify me,
because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
Everything that the Father has is mine;
for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine
and declare it to you."
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Com'mon! Isn't that actually such a huge cliffhanger?! I picture the disciples on the edge of their seats soaking up everything Jesus is telling them, and then Jesus is like "Hey guys! I have a whole bunch of other stuff to tell you, it's so intense... but... I'm not actually going to tell you now because I don't think you can handle it..." Oh. Uh... okay. Fine.
This is one of those instances where, in the moment, I would be extremely frustrated and insist that I was a grown-up and could handle it, whatever it was. Yet, once my hindsight glasses were on, I would be extremely grateful that I was being kept from biting off more than I could chew.
My hindsight glasses tend to be the ones that help me see the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life. How many times have you looked back on some part of your life and thought about how present God actually was? Can you think of them all? I surely can't.
Jesus told us that the Holy Spirit will come and be our guide. Well, the Holy Spirit has come and has not left. Don't forget that.
Don't forget that Jesus still has much more to tell you.
Don't forget that sometimes it will seem to be more than you can bear, but it will be bearable with the Holy Spirit.
Don't forget that the Holy Spirit will lead you.
Sure, you know these things. Sure, I know these things; I'm the one who wrote this, am I not? But I do forget them -- or at least I don't actively think about them much. How different might my life be if I tried a little bit harder to remember these and listen to the Holy Spirit more?
Jesus made a point to bring awareness to the disciples that the Holy Spirit was coming. It was important for them to know that everything that comes directly from the Father and through the Son will further go through the Spirit. Let us not neglect to pray to the Holy Spirit too.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
"I have much more to tell you."
How can you bring a greater awareness of the Holy Spirit into your life?
Is there anything that God is trying to tell you now that you are not listening to? Has He provided what you need to bear it?
Are you waiting for God to tell you something specific? How can you keep from growing impatient and rather trust that you will be told when the time is ready?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
"Come, Holy Spirit, into my mind."
"Flow, Holy Spirit, into my heart."
"Sink, Holy Spirit, into my soul."
For the Rest of Your Day...
The Holy Spirit is still here to guide you. Reflect on the ways you notice the Holy Spirit working in your life today and be sure to also pray directly to the Spirit.
