Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
Today Universal Church celebrates the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome. This Church, dedicated in 324, is the home parish of the Pope. We remember and celebrate how this holy building was set aside as a special place to worship and praise God.
You and I, through baptism, are also holy buildings or temples, and therefore we are also called to be set aside for worship and praise of God. In today’s gospel, Jesus gets upset with those who are making His Father’s house into a marketplace. The Temple was never intended to be a place for secular activities, rather, it was meant for Godly activities...it was a place of prayer, worship, and praising God!
Jesus wants no secular marketplaces within holy buildings. We can so often get stuck here as well - we live as if our lives are marketplaces. We fill our minds, hearts, and bodies, with so much marketplace type stuff - noise, shopping, buying, electronics, downloading, spending, tweeting, texting, browsing, etc... As a result, our holy temples become busy places consumed with everything, but God.
Do you see your body, mind, heart, and soul, as a place where God dwells? It is! What is the marketplace in you that needs to be driven out? Let Jesus drive it out!
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Do you see your body, mind, heart, and soul as a place where God dwells? If not, why not?
What is the marketplace in you that needs to be driven out? What things distract you from the realization of God's presence and the ability to truly encounter him in your life?
How can you help those in your life – family, friends, etc. – stay focused on the things that are good and holy and not be distracted always by the things of the world?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Make your home in me."
"You're the king of my heart."
"My life is for you, Lord."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Give something away today. Whether it's clothes, money, an old piece of technology that you don't use but are holding on to, or some other things that you know you don't need even if you like the thing – give it away! Let the act of charity of donating something to someone in need help drive out from you the marketplace of attachment to the things of the world.
