Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
There is a story I read somewhere a long time ago that has really stuck with me.
I can’t find the exact story right now as it’s been so long, but it went something like this:
There was a Missionary of Charity sister, one in Mother Teresa’s order, who was sad one day.
Mother Teresa approached the sister and asked why she was so glum.
The sister explained that she was sad because she wanted to do God’s will, but felt like she didn’t know the way and wasn’t trying hard enough.
Mother Teresa said something to the effect of: “Well stop trying to run ahead of Jesus, but instead follow Him and His cross.”
God will lead the way.
And it can be seen again today as we read the Gospel about the three Magi following the star and finding Jesus. It was the star that led the way to the new-born Christ, the hope and joy that the three wisemen were looking for. They had to patiently follow the star, and couldn’t have made it on their own if it weren’t for God directing them.
This new year, instead of rushing ahead of Jesus and trying to do great things for Him on our own volition, let’s patiently ask God to give us light, the beautiful radiant light talked about in the first reading, to light us up with His love and guide us on the path that leads to Him.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
In what ways do you try to "run ahead of Jesus" or follow your own path instead of following Him?
How can you learn to slow down and follow God more, instead of doing it all on your own?
Whether you have already broken them or not, are your new years resolutions things that help you follow God's will or your own will? Why?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"I will follow you Lord."
"Jesus, I trust in you."
"Come Holy Spirit."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Take a look at your goals and "resolutions" and ask yourself if you are doing it for you or for God. We do not have to impress Him by coming up with these amazing plans, we simply need to follow Him. So take a look at your goals today and fine-tune them so you follow God more and try to impress Him less.
