Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
What does it take to get to Heaven? I think about this question all of the time.
Am I doing enough to get into Heaven?
I ask the question a lot - but I think it's the wrong question. It's like saying to a friend or a boyfriend/girlfriend ... "Am I loving you enough? I'm trying to do the bare minimum here ... am I accomplishing it?"
That's not love at all! That's a contract, not a covenant. That's something we say to our boss - "Am I doing everything that's required for my job?"
The young man in today's Gospel is asking if he's doing enough. Has he undertaken enough tasks and followed enough rules to get into Heaven. Jesus recites the commandnments and he says "All of these I have observed. What else do I lack?"
So Jesus says, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
He tells the man: Give everything to me. Keep nothing for yourself. Everything you have is mine.
The young man walks away sad because he's not ready to give it all. He still wants a little for himself. He still wants to keep a little part of his heart for his own.
But we're called to do the same thing. Give everything we have, everything we are, everything we will ever be over to the Lord. Then follow Him wherever He leads. Are you ready to give it all to Jesus, to keep nothing for yourself, to sacrifice every bit of your will in exchange for His will?
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Do you ask the question, "am I doing enough?" Why is that the wrong question?
Jesus asks you to give everything? What do you think of His question to you?
Are you doing your bare minimum? Or are you giving Jesus your all?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"I want to be in heaven."
"I will give Jesus everything."
"Give it all."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Giving Jesus everything can be a bit scary. what is one thing you can give to Him each day this week to give him more?
