Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
The funny thing about getting old is we begin to lose some of the gifts we took for granted.
Our physical ability.
At times, even our faith.
Gone is our bright-eyed, youthful, energetic view of the world around us. Instead, it’s replaced with a jaded, grizzled, sometimes cynical perspective. I’ve seen it in my friends, my loved ones, my coworkers, and even myself.
And you know what?
Life is all about new challenges. It is about how we persevere through those challenges.
In today’s first reading, we get a glimpse at what can happen as we age. Solomon is led away from the faith that made him stronger as a young man. He focuses that faith on what’s around him. He failed to persevere and step up to the new challenges in his life.
In a way, it’s a challenge we all face as we get older. Our time with God is split with family, job, and other extracurriculars. Making time for God becomes just as much of a concern as doubting our faith. But getting old is not all bad because...
....the funny thing about getting old is we’re now wiser to recognize and face those challenges head on. We can persevere and adapt as the challenges in our life change.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
What are some gifts you might be taking for granted right now? How can you be more grateful for them now?
How can you begin now so that you can persevere when the challenges in your life change?
How can you help remind people (in a gentle loving way) that God is still important in their life, especially if they have been slipping away from their faith?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Guide me Lord."
"Here I am Lord."
"Come Holy Spirit."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Make God such a priority in your life now that you could never let Him slip from your mind when you face new challenges. Ask Mary for her intersession to help you persevere until the end like she did.
