Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
Have you ever had one of those classic bad days? The ones where just about everything goes wrong, you’re tired, you’re mad at someone, you’re hungry, and you just feel stressed out. At the end of a day like that, do you still praise God?
I love some good praise and worship, but I am not the best at praising God daily as I should. I want to praise His name forever and ever, but sometimes I just get caught up in my problems. It can feel easy to see all the things that are going wrong and say, “God what are you doing?” and feel a little lost or angry. However, God is always doing something wonderous. Out of every suffering or struggle, God can work good through it in our lives. An example of that from my life is when I moved to a new place last year. It was really difficult for me; I didn’t know many people and I felt really alone. I loved what I was doing for work, but it was still a sad and painful few months. Through that loneliness, the Lord guided me to rely on Him and not on myself. When I learned to really lean on Him and trust Him, especially through daily prayer and praise, everything became more joyful. That’s just a small example, always praise God for all the good things He’s doing for us, even if they don’t feel so good at the time. Let your praise of God bring some joy into your day.
Look at the thousands of years of great things that the Lord has done for us too! How He created us out of His love and for His love. We always struggle with our sins, but we have the mercy and grace purchased for us by the life and death Jesus Christ. God works all things for our good so that we may spend eternity with Him in Heaven! That’s a lot of good stuff right there, and that love is why we will praise His name forever. So, no matter how you’re feeling today, praise God for all the good things He has done for you. Praise Him for His love and look forward to being with Him in Heaven forever.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
How often do you praise God? Do you praise Him even when things are difficult?
When was a time that the Lord brought about something good in your life, physically or spiritually, through some kind of hardship?
What are some things you want to praise God for today?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Lord, you are wonderful."
"You are my life."
"Thank you for your love."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Today, praise God. Write out a list of all the things you want to praise God for, even the things that you aren't too happy about. Really take your time with this list and contemplate all the good things God does. After praising Him in your own words, prayerfully listen to your favorite praise and worship song.
