Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
This reading seems kind of tough, but in reality it is just true. How many times have we been “listening “ but never really heard the instructions, or “watched” but didn’t see what was right in front of us? God wants us to know and love Him, but if we cannot understand the earthly examples in front of us, how can we understand the Glory of Heaven?
We are blessed to be a Resurrection people! We are blessed to know the truth, but if we cannot understand the simplicity of the parables then we cannot fully understand the supernatural truth of heaven. We need to humble ourselves and let him teach us, instead of already “knowing” everything. Let the Lord teach us, especially through the magisterium; the teaching office of the Church. We need to be humble and dive into the depth of simplicity.
So as we go through today, remember that we all still have a lot to learn. Let God teach you in small and big ways, even parables. And make sure you see what God has in store and listen to what He is actually saying instead of trying to project your own views on it and not hearing or seeing truth. Hear, see, and truly listen today because God has something unique for you that can truly change your life, even if it seems simple.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
How often do you brush someone or something off because you "already know it"?
What topics, especially about the Faith, do you tend to tune out or skip because you've heard it before or don't want to learn more?
What is something new you can learn about Christ from this Gospel, even if you have read and prayed with it before? How can you bring this kind of humility into your everyday actions?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Help me listen."
"I want to know You."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Whenever you are about to tune out or move on from something today because you already know it or have heard it before, be patient and humble. Listen attentively and try to learn something new. Put this into practice especially at Mass this Sunday. Really listen to the readings, to the homily, and to the Eucharistic prayers, even if you have heard it a thousand times before. Allow yourself to learn from Christ so that you may know Him better and grow deeper in your relationship.
