Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
"Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof;
only say the word and my servant will be healed."
We hear this phrase every week, but do we really get it? Do we really understand what we are saying when we recite this at Mass?
The centurion has a faith and trust in Jesus that few of us have ever had. A true humble confidence. He knows that Jesus has power over everything and that just His command can change everything. He trusted that Jesus could save his servant dying at home, yet we don't trust that Jesus can help us through this break up, or this test, or whatever we are going through at the time. The humility and trust of this man is simply incredible. I don't know about you, but I know I am unworthy of Jesus in my heart right now. As much as I would love to say that my heart is ready for Jesus to enter fully, the truth is I am not. But the greater truth is, it doesn't matter. Jesus can heal anything if He wills it and we ask.
So instead of trying to make your heart perfect, ask Him to come in and help you clean up. Recognize your sinfulness and need for Him, and trust that He can handle it. I know I can't, so it has to be Him. Let us hope, pray, and trust in Him today with humble confidence.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Do you trust God? What are some areas that are hardest for you to trust in Him?
How can you become more humble to recognize your need for God?
Do you go to God when things are messiest or do you try to make it all clean first? How can you begin to let Him in, even during your darkest hour?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Jesus, I trust in You."
"Come Holy Spirit."
"I love you, Lord."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Be humble and trust in the Lord. Give Him that thing that scares you the most, and trust that He can handle it even better than you could.
