Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
That is Jesus. The light of our world. The beacon we strive to reach. The lighthouse we navigate by on rough seas. When we live in His light, the darkness of the world has no power over us.
Where the sun is shining, there is no night. Where the light of Jesus shines, there is no darkness. The night, though, is not completely dark. Most nights, we can find a source of light as well. The moon. As we all know, the moon does not give off its own light, but reflects light of the sun. Just the same, we all can be as the moon for the others in our lives. We can be a light for others through whatever dark times they may be going through, by reflecting the light of Jesus ourselves.
Keep yourself oriented towards Jesus. Not only will you personally not walk in darkness, but just like the face of the moon reflects the sun, you are then enabled to reflect the “light of the world” that Jesus is. You never can tell who you know that might be needing a bit of light in their lives. Virtually anyone you know or meet might be fighting some form of darkness at any given time. Strive to be the channel by which those in need can realize the light of Jesus. Do not be intimidated. Leave the real work to Jesus; He is the light, as He has said, you simply need to reflect that light and that love through your own life.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
How has Jesus come into your life and changed it?
What parts of your life do you need Jesus to shine his light?
How can you reflect Jesus's light to others?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"The light of the world."
"Jesus is my light."
"Lord, shine in my life."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Make a list of all the different parts of your life. Ask Jesus to come and shine His light in your life.
