STEP #1: LECTIO / READ
Jeremiah 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13
This word of the LORD came to me:
Go, cry out this message for Jerusalem to hear!
I remember the devotion of your youth,
how you loved me as a bride,
Following me in the desert,
in a land unsown.
Sacred to the LORD was Israel,
the first fruits of his harvest;
Should any presume to partake of them,
evil would befall them, says the LORD.
When I brought you into the garden land
to eat its goodly fruits,
You entered and defiled my land,
you made my heritage loathsome.
The priests asked not,
“Where is the LORD?”
Those who dealt with the law knew me not:
the shepherds rebelled against me.
The prophets prophesied by Baal,
and went after useless idols.
Be amazed at this, O heavens,
and shudder with sheer horror, says the LORD.
Two evils have my people done:
they have forsaken me, the source of living waters;
They have dug themselves cisterns,
broken cisterns, that hold no water.
STEP #2: MEDITATIO / MEDITATE
You hear a new song, and it's your favorite
And pretty soon you'll be changing the station
And all your old shoes are looking brand new
They wanna be worn but they never get the chance too
Heavy into everything
Ready for the next thing
To catch your eye for a while then you're over it
You change your mind on it
Soon as the shines gone
Like you always do
I'm Going to Make You Miss Me by Sam Hunt is currently my jam. I love when it comes on the radio. But this song is really true. In a couple of weeks, I’ll be over it and on to the next thing.
Humans have been doing this for thousands of years. This is exactly what God is telling the Israelites through the prophet Jeremiah in our reading today. God begins with, “I remember the devotion of your youth, how you loved me as a bride.” In the beginning, it is so easy to fall in love with God. To want to spend all of our time with Him. To want to pray more, go to adoration more and want to learn more and more about our faith.
So what happens? Why does God stop being that super important relationship? God answers this for us, “When I brought you into the garden land to eat its goodly fruits, You entered and defiled my land, you made my heritage loathsome.” We take our relationship with God for granted. We take the fruit that He has given us and we forget that He is the one who made it. God is still our Lord and our King. It is us who have let the shine leave our relationship with Him.
But when we leave God, and get distracted by something else we lose God’s light in our life. We need Him. We end up in a place that maybe we are not meant to be. I know in my own life, when I am not taking time for my prayer life, when I miss my adoration hour, I because stressed, irritable and anxious. And I end up that way because I have chosen other things instead of God. “Be amazed at this, O heavens, and shudder with sheer horror, says the LORD.
Two evils have my people done: they have forsaken me, the source of living waters; They have dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that hold no water.”
When we put other things before God, we are chosen broken cisterns. We are looking at the God of God, but then choosing something else instead. Instead of reaching for the beautiful life he has planned for us, we get distracted and choose something else. But, only God can really fill our hearts. God is always waiting for us to choose Him. “The human heart is not wrong in wanting love; it is wrong only in thinking that a human can completely supply it,” said Venerable Fulton Sheen.
Don’t let your faith or your relationship with God fade away. Don’t lose the love you had for God when you first discovered Him.
Take time today to rediscover your faith. Remember the very first time you felt God’s love today. Go back and pray with that moment.
STEP #3: ORATIO / PRAY
I remember the devotion of your youth, how you loved me as a bride, Following me in the desert,
in a land unsown.
God, when was the first time I felt your love? Help me to remember that moment.
What do I let come between me and God? Where else do I look for love?
How can I remember that God's love is what I need?
STEP #4: CONTEMPLATIO / CONTEMPLATE
"The human heart is not wrong in wanting love; it is wrong only in thinking that a human can completely supply it.” - Venerable Fulton Sheen.
"God, I love you."
"God, I need you."
"God, I choose you."
FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAY...
Pray about the first time you encountered God. What was that like? How did you experience God? Reflect on that love of God you felt. Pray about how you can remember that and carry it with you. It is not God who changes, but us. How will you remember to put God first?
