Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
Venerable Fulton Sheen once said “As the Church ceases to be holy, it loses the love of the Blessed Mother. And the more we return to the love of the Blessed Mother, the more we love the Church because the Blessed Mother is the symbol of the Church.”
Today is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Why do we celebrate a feast of the Rosary? Because 500 years ago, as the Turkish Empire was sweeping across Europe and destroying Christianity, Pope Pius V encouraged all of the faithful to pray the Rosary on the eve of October 7th. That day a naval battle ensued in the area of Lepanto (near Sicily) and the Christians, who were outnumbered three to one, overcame the Turks in this fierce battle. It was the beginning of the turn of the war for the Christians. Had they not succeeded, it is speculated that the Turks would have overcome all of Europe.
This victory was attributed to Our Lady because of the prayer vigil held in her honor. With that, this feast was appropriately titled “Our Lady of Victory.” It was only later that the title was changed to Our Lady of the Rosary. But let us not forget that it was through the Rosary that the men were victorious. So likewise, we must turn to Our Mother in the fight against “the principalities, the powers, and rulers of this present darkness” (Eph 6:12ff). And as we turn to Mary in the Most Holy Rosary, so we will be drawn into a deeper love with her and the Church that her Son established for our safe keeping in this world until we see Him in the next. Happy Feast!
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
How can you grow closer to our Lady today?
What does Mary want to show you about her Son?
How does Mary lead us closer to the Church?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Our Lady of Victory, pray for us."
"Hail Mary, full of grace."
"Mary help me."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Take a few moments to pray the rosary today. If praying the rosary is new for you you can learn how here.
