Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
Have you ever had someone say your name over and over and over again to the point where it's annoying? If you've been ignoring this person for a silly reason, or even a good one, you have probably found yourself engaging back by saying, "What?" Their persistence has worn your down.
I use to think that's what this passage was about. God finally would give in to me after I asked for something enough just to get me off his back like my mom did when I was a kid just saying, "mom, mom, mom, mom..."
But that's not how it works - well it's not how it's worked in my life. I have a prayer I've been praying daily for over two decades that is still unanswered. I'm persistent in my ask, uniting my heart to His will, His ways, and His plan ... and yet still, nothing. Or only crumbs of things that might be something, but turn out to be nothing, or even less than nothing.
Am I not being persistent enough? Or am I asking for things that are not in line with God's Will? Or is He asking me to be patient, to continue to come to Him with my request, but be open to what He has in store right now?
I'm betting it's that last one. The Lord wants to give us anything that will make us holy. That's what we should be asking for, all day, every day. Lord, please bring people, situations, and circumstances into my life that will make me holy. Be persistent in your asking for these things. He will never fail to help you be holy.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
What have I been persistent in praying for or about?
Where do I need to be patient right now?
What does the Lord have in store for me right now, today?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Focus on today - the people and prayers and events that God places in your path.
