Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
A couple of years ago my brother told me he was trying to put up some blinds on his back sliding door. He said he would put them up and they would fall back down. So he would patiently pick them up again and they would fall back down. He continued to attempt to put the blinds on the window, and each time he would try to do it they would fall or get tangled up. Each time he would fail he would become more angry and frustrated and by the seventh time he found himself shouting out loud and throwing the blinds down, wanting to give up because he was so angry. Then all the sudden his little daughter, who was only 6 years old, came up to him and said, "Daddy it's okay. It's okay that you can't do it. All that matters is that God loves us and that we love each other."
Gosh if that isn't the voice of God speaking through a child I don't know what is! You see, too often we try to overcomplicate life trying to figure all things out and succeed at all things, yet when we try to accomplish things ourselves we see how inept we actually are and we end up feeling like a failure. So what's the solution?
We must first see that all that matters is that God loves us and that we should love each other. And so if everything around you seems to be falling apart and you simply want to shout out loud and scream because you are so angry and broken and feeling unloved, then stop and ask yourself; "How much am I praying each day? Do I go to the source of love daily for at least 20 minutes to allow Him to love me?" And if you are already praying 20 minutes a day and things seem to continue to be falling apart even more, then it might be time to pray 30 minutes a day! This can seem like a lot yet if we have time for 30 minutes of a tv show, a video game, or a sport, then I think we have 30 minutes for God. You see, when life gets hard and we feel like we're stuck and we can't succeed, it doesn't mean change more it means pray more.
So go now to the God of the Universe, allow Him to love you and as you are filled with His love, He will fill you to overflowing and this love.A love that will flow out over each person you meet.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Do you love God with all your heart? Do you let Him love you?
How do you let that love between you and God overflow and become love for your neighbors?
What are some practical ways you can pray more everyday?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Jesus, I love you."
"Help me to love like you."
"Thank you for loving me."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Take a hard look at your prayer life. If you need more prayer time, make it a priority. Pray before you watch Netflix or play video games, instead of pushing it off until later.
