Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
When was the last time you went to confession? Some may think you only need to go when you have committed a mortal sin. If you are no longer committing mortal sins, you may be falling into repetitive venial sins, especially nowadays.
We are in times where we are being tested more than ever. Are you falling into anger, sloth, pride and not forgiving others? It is easy to do when we watch the news, read social media posts and talk with our family and friends who do not see the world through the eyes of faith.
We must always think of eternity and our eternal souls. We must continue to pray for those who are walking in the darkness and are lost. We must forgive those who hurt and betray us.
I find my soul needs weekly confession because I am striving to be a saint and the state of the world around me is fighting against holiness. Living a virtuous life is difficult, and I am being tested at every turn. God is giving me ample opportunities to exercise virtue and sometimes I fall. So, I take full advantage of God's blessing of confession.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a gift to us, and we should remind others of the graces that flow from Jesus as we repent of our sins. God is not there to shame us; He is there to heal us! Let’s run to Jesus for His mercy and remind ourselves and others of the need to reconcile to Him through confession.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Where do I feel tested or tempted toward sin currently?
What makes living a virtuous life difficult for me?
How have I experienced God's mercy?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Lord, have mercy."
"Jesus, restore me."
"Lead me closer to you."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Pray with an Examination of Conscience, and if you are able to, go to Confession.
