Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
What brings you the most joy? This may seem like a simple question, but it really has a lot of depth. It speaks to your priorities and what you value most in life.
Mary clearly has her priorities straight. This reading from Isaiah reflects the heart of Mary, “I rejoice heartily in the LORD, in my God is the joy of my soul.” How many of us honestly answered that first question with God? And those of use that did likely had other joys that we would consider equal. But why is this the case? If God is supposed to be the joy of our souls, if we are created to be in communion with Him, then why are we constantly seeking the joy of our souls elsewhere?
It’s not an issue on God’s part, it is wholly on ours. When God is not a priority, then why would being close to Him bring us the most joy? If you couldn’t care less about football, then watching the Super Bowl is much less significant to you than it would be to a fanatic. We need to make God a bigger priority if we want the greater joy that only comes from Him. And ultimately that is the only place where the greatest level of joy, the fullness of joy, comes from.
We can experience joy in a lot of ways in this life and that is good. But don’t settle for some joy when you can have it all. Yes, it takes more work to make God your number one priority, but the joy is beyond worth it. Mary is the ultimate witness of that! So let’s follow her example, ask for her intercession, and let her be our guide to this joy and the relationship with God that makes it all possible.
Our Lady of Fatima… Pray for us.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
What helps you be joyful?
How can you make God more of a priority?
How can you be more like Mary?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"“I rejoice heartily in the Lord."
"In my God is the joy of my soul."
"Our Lady of Fatima… Pray for us."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Mary models joy for us through out the gospel. How can you be more like Mary and joyful today?
