Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
I don’t know about you, but I want to build a house on rock so when the flood comes my house would not be shaken because it was well built.
Jesus says in today's Gospel:, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command?” Many of us naturally think of the commandments and obedience when we hear this. If we just obey his precepts and do not sin, our house will be built on rock. But it is the verses before this that move me the most. The most important thing is the state of the person’s heart. The goodness in a person’s heart produces good and the evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.
A good tree produces good fruit and likewise a bad tree rotten fruit. It is all about the heart. Whatever we think, say, or do comes from the heart. Is our heart jealous, angry, greedy, or judgmental? Or is our heart filled with the Spirit of God’s love, peace, and joy?
In order for us to live out the two greatest commandments, our lives need to be centered around God. We cannot love ourselves or those around us on our own will and with our own human hearts. Every day in our prayer time with God, let’s offer Him our flawed hearts and ask Him to cleanse and purify our hearts with His heart. Let’s ask for Him to renew us with His Spirit so we can love Him, ourselves, and our neighbor as He loves us.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
What do you feel in the depths of your heart when you take the time to listen? What parts of your heart still need to be surrendered to God and converted?
How are you being called right now to grow in your love of God and others?
Where in your life would you like to ask God today for a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"I give you my heart."
"Teach me to love."
"Come, Holy Spirit."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
There are a lot of nature metaphors in Scripture and in today's Gospel – spend some time today outside, reflecting on God's creation and what the world around us can teach us about being truly rooted in Christ to have a firm foundation.
