STEP #1: LECTIO / READ
Today's Reading is the Gospel, and can be found in:
Click here to read it on the USCCB's website.
*Please note this change in how we give the reading. We will now be telling you where it is as well as providing the link to read online. This is in order to be sure we have the proper permissions for everything we are sharing as well as make things as easy as possible for you.**
STEP #2: MEDITATIO / MEDITATE
How do you prepare for your day? What’s your morning routine?
I love coffee. Particularly in the summer, I love when Dunkin Donuts has their butter pecan iced coffee. Throw some cream and liquid sugar in there too, and I’m good to go. It is what keeps me awake and helps keep me going throughout the day. When my day doesn’t start off with a nice, strong cup of coffee, I just feel off.
While it’s important to be awake and ready to seize the day physically and mentally, it’s even more important to be spiritually ready to encounter the Lord each and every day. Honestly, we should feel even more off when we don’t start our day off with prayer or when we go a whole day without praying. We’ve all been there, and we’ve all been guilty of it. When I reach the end of the day and realize I haven’t prayed or haven’t gone to the sacrament of Reconciliation recently, I don’t feel quite right. I don’t feel nourished, and usually, I feel pretty bad.
I know for me personally, sometimes it’s hard to keep waiting and doing the right thing and not really seeing the results or the fruits of my work. I often long for someone to notice the good that I do and be rewarded in return. We should do what we’re supposed to do even if we think no one is watching. We should love and serve without expecting anything in return. God sees us. He sees the goodness of hearts and will reward us often in ways we don’t expect. He sees us struggle with sin, yet he still loves us despite our wrong-doings. Eventually, the Lord will come and return and reward those who are faithful to him and persevere through the hard and dry times. Do whatever it takes to stay awake until then. Continue to serve the Lord even when it’s hard and even when you don’t feel successful. Trust that the Lord sees you, knows your heart, and loves you always.
STEP #3: ORATIO / PRAY
How am I preparing my heart and soul to encounter the Lord?
What do I need to do to stay awake spiritually?
What am I doing to serve the Lord even when I think no one is watching?
STEP #4: CONTEMPLATIO / CONTEMPLATE
"Lord, you see me and you know me."
"Serve the Lord with all your heart."
FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAY...
Make prayer a priority today. Think about how you would act differently if you knew you were going to meet the Lord today, and then go do it.
