CARPE VERBUM

Stressed to Blessed

9/11/2017

Step #1: Lectio / Read

Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Colossians 1:24–2:3

Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate

Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
Today, many of us will be reminded of where we were during the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. It will be on our televisions, our social media feeds, talked about in our classrooms, and yes, even this reflection. This is a time where we'll remember the people who died. The mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children who some families still grieve.

But the thing about tragedy is, there is a silver lining. Whether we choose to recognize is the hardest part. Yet, it's not impossible because through God, all things are possible! Tragedy like this can be a reminder from God to cherish the time we have with our loved ones. It also puts into perspective what really matters in our lives. Suffering can force us to ask ourselves this question: Are the current struggles in my life really worth stressing over?

If we sit down and spend time listening to God in prayer, we'll find that answer. Give your suffering to God and He will turn that stressing into blessing. Sometimes, what's ironic is the things we see as "struggles" come from the true blessings in our lives -- like a tough day at the job we prayed for, pouring some of our money into our home or car, or dealing with uncooperative children. We're blessed with the opportunity to have, or find, work, a place to live, and bring life into this world. Not everyone has that.

If it's one thing I'll remember from 9/11/2001, it's sitting in my car and realizing a lot of what I stress over isn't worth it; especially, when I rely on God to provide.

Be blessed.

Step #3: Oratio / Pray

These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
What are some things that you take for granted? How can you appreciate them more on a daily basis?

What are some stresses in your life that hold you back from seeing the blessings in your life? How can you focus more on the blessings?

How can you let the struggles and suffering in your life be for the glory of God?

Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate

In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"I give it all to You, Lord."

"All Glory to God."

"Come Holy Spirit."

Step #5: Actio / Act

In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Pray for those who struggle today with the lost of family and/or friends during 9/11. Offer up any difficulties and suffering you may have for those less fortunate and ultimately for the glory of God.
