Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
This morning while I was at the gym I realized something very true about the people who go there: everyone comes to gain something. Whether it be to gain muscle, or to gain strength, endurance, confidence, whatever it may be, we all go to the gym to gain.
This idea of striving to gain something applies to all areas of life, as well. We go to college to gain knowledge, we go to social activities to gain friendships, we go to restaurants to gain food, and the list goes on. It make sense, when we think about it... We as humans desire things. We want to gain things because when we see things that are good, we desire them to help make us better people.
In the Gospel today, however, Jesus is presenting us with a difficult challenge. While it is so natural for us to desire to gain things in life, Jesus is telling us that in order for us to save our lives, we must LOSE them.
He is challenging us to great humility. While gaining things can be good, Jesus reminds us that there is such beauty in being able to let go and lose ourselves completely in Him. While the idea of losing our lives may seem daunting, we have to remember that the Lord desires nothing but good for our lives. He would never ask us to do anything that wouldn't be good for us in the long run.
Remember, you were made for greatness. You were made for a world and a life far better than you could ever imagine. Jesus is inviting you today to surrender yourself entirely into His hands. Lose yourself in Him, and you will gain more than you could ever hope for. Trust in His goodness, and know that He desires good for your life. Do not be afraid to lose your life in Him in order to gain so much more...
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
What are you striving to gain in life?
What is the Lord calling you to let go of in your life?
What is the Lord asking you to surrender to Him today?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"Whoever loses his life will save it."
"I desire humility."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Think of one thing you really feel the Lord calling you to surrender to Him. Take some time in prayer today and truly offer that one thing to the Lord and lay it at the foot of the cross.
