Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
At first glance, the first reading reveals a lot of obligations and structure.
Structure and obligation remains a big part of the church today. The best example of those who follow it are the elders in our church. The older lay people who participate in 95 percent of the parish ministries, attend daily Mass and the earliest Sunday Masses, and are ALWAYS in the front row. Those actions are all for the love of God. My grandmother was one of those women who dedicated her time and talent. Now, my mom does too.
When I was a child, I noticed how much time they dedicated to parish ministry. I never asked why because the reason is in their actions. It’s an appreciation of how far God has brought them. He never asks for much except to show Him our love in return. As a teen and young adult, structure at church sometimes cramped my style. The older I get, I understand it’s a way to thank God for what He’s done for me.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Do you take for granted that someone else will just take care of all the ministries and holy hours your parish offers?
Do you think of Mass and parish participation as an obligation or an opportunity to love the Lord?
Are you stifled by obligations or encouraged by opportunities?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"I want to serve you Lord."
"I want to know you more."
"I want to love you well."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Choose an aspect of Church structure that you've had an issue with in the past and see how it can fit into your life today. See where you fit in the midst of your parish, don't wait until you're older.
