Step #1: Lectio / Read
Thus says the LORD:
Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her,
all you who love her;
exult, exult with her,
all you who were mourning over her!
Oh, that you may suck fully
of the milk of her comfort,
that you may nurse with delight
at her abundant breasts!
For thus says the LORD:
Lo, I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river,
and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent.
As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms,
and fondled in her lap;
as a mother comforts her child,
so will I comfort you;
in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.
When you see this, your heart shall rejoice
and your bodies flourish like the grass;
the LORD's power shall be known to his servants.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
I am a mommy's girl; ever since I was little, I always wanted to be around her. I used to cry a lot when we would get separated and now that I'm grown, we text each other all the time. She is my best friend. When I read this passage, I was immediately reminded of the love that my mom has for me. She fed me, cared for me, and comforted me when I was sad. Her love for me reminds me of the tenderness of God's love for us. In our first reading today, the Lord reminds us that he cares for us just like our mothers do. What comfort these words bring!
If a motherly presence is absent in your life, have no fear. Our Lord Jesus entrusted the Virgin Mary to take care of us in the same way. She is our mother, just as much as your earthly mother is. After Pope St. John Paul II's mother died when he was a young boy, he went up to an image of Mary and said "you must be my mother now." Her tender care for him eventually became the basis of his papal motto, "Totus Tuus Maria" (Totally yours, Mary). Mary deeply cares for you and loves you because we are all her spiritual children. Take heart and ask Mary to come into your life. Her main mission in life is to take you straight to the heart of her beloved Son, Jesus.
Similarly, Jerusalem is a foreshadowing of the Holy Catholic Church. The Church is called our Mother because the Church is the spouse of Christ. She cares for us in our time of need, and we can always find refuge in the way the Church brings God's mercy to life in abundance. Therefore, we can rejoice. Rejoice that the Lord Jesus came to us on Earth establish our One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Faith! The Lord will always be prosperous to us, just like He promised He would be for Jerusalem. Our bodies can flourish like the grass because the Lord's power shall be made known to us!
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
"As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you."
Ask God to show you how much He loves you today.
How can I better open my heart to allow myself to receive God's love?
When was the last time I went to Confession? Consider going soon so you can experience God's love and mercy.
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
"As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you."
"Mary, I want you to be my mother. Bring me to Jesus."
"Lord God, show me your divine mercy."
For the Rest of Your day...
Pray a decade of the Rosary to ask the Lord to open your heart to his tender, loving care, and for Mary to show you the way.
