Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
How many times have I demanded a sign from the Lord? If you're really there, can you just do this really big thing, Lord? If you do this, then I'll surely love you more. I even try to give myself a pass by praying like this: "Lord, I love you, You know how much I love you, and even if you don't do this next thing that I'm going to ask you, I'll still love you - but if you want to show your love for me in a really big way today, it'd be great if you could [fill in the blank]."
Am I Lazarus or the rich man? Am I trusting in His infinite goodness and wisdom or do I think that my way is better? Am I loving Him or not?
That last question is what it really comes down to in the end. Do I love the Lord or do I love me more? The rich man loved himself more. He was told about the good things God has done, he'd known them his whole life. But he spent his time on earth serving himself, his wants, his needs, and his desires with no regard for anyone else, let alone God.
Then he died and found himself in hell wondering where he went wrong. He was probably thinking there would always be time to repent. There would always be time to give to the poor later. There would always be time to love. Later, there would always be time for all of that "God Stuff" some other time.
Is that what I'm doing? Is that what you're doing? Waiting until later, when it's easier, or just not so busy to love God and serve Him first?
Ash Wednesday was two weeks ago. Are you waiting until later to really dive into your Lenten penance? Start anew again today. Today is the day to pray more. Today is the day to fast. Today is the day to give of yourself in service to God. Don't wait for later.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Read the gospel again. Are you the rich young man? Or are you Lazarus?
Do you love God? How would He know it? How would others know it?
What are you putting off till "tomorrow" that you could do today to serve the Lord?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"I love you Lord."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
Today for your act, give up procrastination. Don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today especially for prayer, service and other places of your life.
