Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again)
"In the beginning of today’s gospel it talks about Simon’s mother in law, who was really sick with a fever. Jesus came to her, took her hand, and helped her up. She was immediately healed. What if she was to reject Jesus? What if she felt as if she couldn’t accept his help, his healing touch. What if she said no? Well, she would have died. I keep thinking about how accurate this could be in representing our souls. Sick and in need of healing, yet, if we reject the one thing that can heal us, we’ll die. Here we are with Jesus right in front of us, searching for us, longing to heal us of our afflictions. Are we able to accept his help? Are we able to accept the reality that we need Him?
Something that really struck me from the gospel today was that “everyone” was looking for Jesus, but it doesn’t mention them finding him. What it does mention is Jesus finding them. Reading this, I realized I’ve been there, I’ve looked and looked for Jesus but feel as if he is so far away. I’ve heard about his many works and miracles from other people, people much holier than I, and I long to experience him myself. I find myself asking what am I doing wrong? Why can’t I find Him?
The answer is ME.
There is too much of me and not enough of Jesus. I decided that it was totally up to ME to seek out and find the Lord. I didn’t think it would count if He found me, that would be too easy. If I’m being real with you, I needed to let the Lord into my search for him. I needed Jesus to find me, I still do! Friends, we’re nothing if we aren’t the Lord’s children. There’s no “I’m gonna do this one on my own.” We need HIM."
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Do I believe that you have a plan for me?
How can I be a better disciple?
What do you want to be focus on today?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
Holy Spirit, you are welcome here.
Let my heart be more like yours.
I want to know your heart.
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today
Pray a rosary today for those who suffering from illness.
