Step #1: Lectio / Read
Click the link below or open your Bible to the passage and read through the reading at least once, paying attention to what is happening in the text.
Step #2: Meditatio / Meditate
Use the following meditation to help you reflect more deeply on the Scripture (you may want to read the passage again).
In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays it out in black and white:
*Break the commandments and teach others to do so — 👎
*Uphold the commandments and teach others to do so — 👍
As simple as that logic is, it sometimes seems like the hardest thing to do. Maybe a coworker or loved one makes you impatient. A friend has the latest gossip. You hang around a certain group of people, which make the temptation of your vices echo louder and louder.
When I was in high school, a good friend told me if you ever find yourself in a situation that leads you to sin... just stop! It’s amazing how simple life’s answers are, but then, you get older and complicate them with unnecessary clutter.
As I get older, I’ve learned to remove myself from situations that pull me away from God. I’m not saying it’s easy. It can be a struggle, but if you believe your relationship with God is that important, you’ll realize it’s worth the fight.
Step #3: Oratio / Pray
These questions are to be used to talk to God; have a conversation with the Lord about these questions and what is going on in your heart as you pray today.
Do you find that one person, group of people, or certain situations lead you into sin? What are some examples?
How can you resist temptation and remove yourself from situations that pull you away from God?
How can you use these situations to bring you closer to God and grow in your relationship with Him?
Step #4: Contemplatio / Contemplate
In this step, you listen. Stop talking, let God speak to your heart. You may repeat one of these short phrases to focus your mind on the Lord.
"I need You."
"Help me choose You."
"I love You."
Step #5: Actio / Act
In light of today's reading and your time spent in prayer with the Lord, what concrete action or actions will you take to let this encounter with the Lord bear fruit in you today?
When you find yourself in a situation where you feel yourself slipping into sin and away from God, resist that temptation. Just say no and walk away or do whatever you have to do to resist sin and follow Christ. It will take a lot of strength so ask God for the graces you need to choose to follow Him and His law of love at all times, no matter how difficult it will be.
