STEP #1: LECTIO / READ
Gospel: Mark 9:41-50
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink
because you belong to Christ,
amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,
it would be better for him if a great millstone
were put around his neck
and he were thrown into the sea.
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed
than with two hands to go into Gehenna,
into the unquenchable fire.
And if your foot causes you to sin, cut if off.
It is better for you to enter into life crippled
than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna.
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.
Better for you to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye
than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna,
where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
“Everyone will be salted with fire.
Salt is good, but if salt becomes insipid,
with what will you restore its flavor?
Keep salt in yourselves and you will have peace with one another.”
STEP #2: MEDITATIO / MEDITATE
“One of the great challenges facing the Church in this generation is to foster in all the faithful a sense of personal responsibility for the Church’s mission, and to enable them to fulfill that responsibility as missionary disciples, as a leaven of the Gospel in our world.” - Pope Francis
When Pope Francis spoke these words he was challenging the youth of America to stand up and take on the responsibility of sharing their faith. He is challenging you. Yes, you.
Pope Francis challenges us, just as Jesus challenges us in today’s Gospel. Jesus is pretty direct today. He lays out what we need to do to serve him. And Jesus has some pretty high standards for us to uphold.
He begins with a call to serve in His name. “Jesus said to his disciples: “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.” What are you doing to serve others? Jesus doesn’t mean just give someone a drink of water, He means how can you go out and help others both in works and in spreading the Gospel.
The mission of spreading the gospel is for each and every one of us. As missionary disciples, we need to go out and be the Gospel. To be the Gospel it means to live with passion and love of the Lord. Being the gospel means sharing it with those around you.
Being the Gospel means that you are serving others and putting them before yourself.
The people you need to serve, they are the girl who sits alone at lunch. They are the boy in the locker next to yours. They are the kid on the bus who doesn’t talk to anyone. They are the athlete who is under so much pressure to do well.
Jesus, has asked us to serve all in His name. We are not to be choosey, only helping those who we feel comfortable around. We are not to only serve those we know or those we like. Jesus is challenging us to go out of our comfort zone.
We need to promote our faith actively, with passion. For everyone will be salted with fire. Bring flavor and passion to your faith, and do not be afraid of what others might think. Do it for the love of the Lord.
Pope Leo XIII asked St. Katharine Drexel, “What about you? What are you going to do?” Ask yourself that today.
STEP #3: ORATIO / PRAY
"Jesus said to his disciples: “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.”
What is my mission?
How am I called to serve?
How can I go outside my comfort zone?
STEP #4: CONTEMPLATIO / CONTEMPLATE
"What about you? What are you going to do?”
"I accept your challenge Lord."
"I will live with passion."
FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAY...
Reflect on the things that make you the most passionate about our faith. Seek someone out today to have a conversation with about those passions.
