STEP #1: LECTIO / READ
Matthew 10: 24-33
Jesus said to his Apostles:
“No disciple is above his teacher,
no slave above his master.
It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher,
for the slave that he become like his master.
If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul,
how much more those of his household!
“Therefore do not be afraid of them.
Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed,
nor secret that will not be known.
What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light;
what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.
And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul;
rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy
both soul and body in Gehenna.
Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin?
Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge.
Even all the hairs of your head are counted.
So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Everyone who acknowledges me before others
I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.
But whoever denies me before others,
I will deny before my heavenly Father.”
STEP #2: MEDITATIO / MEDITATE
Most days I look in the mirror and I'm not a big fan of what I see. Truth be told, that's the reason why I generally avoid looking in the mirror.
I lack a lot of self confidence. I'm full of insecurities. I don't few strong enough. I'm not pretty enough. My hair does what it wants, never what I want it to do. I should be funnier. Or less up tight. I should be holier. I just look and see all the things that I am not.
That's what I see when I look in the mirror.
But that's not what God sees. What God sees is his daughter. His daughter who He loves. He created me to be me. He gave me all of the weird things about me like it's impossible for me to wink and that I'm not good at cracking jokes. He made me who I am to love me.
And to God, I am worth everything.
Today Jesus says God knows every hair on my head. That's how much I mean to Him, that He know everything about me.
Jesus says that I am worth more than many sparrows. That line sounds kind of strange today, but sparrows were used as sacrifice. The idea was to repay God for sins.
But me and you. We're worth more than many sparrows. We're worth death on the cross. We are worth the sacrifice of Jesus Himself. Jesus who let Himself be brutally beaten, humiliated and suffocated for all to see did that for you because of your worth. Because He loves you.
So next time you look in the mirror, don't look at what you see, because your image is wrong, distorted. Look at what God sees. God sees His beautiful child. God sees someone made in His image. God sees someone who is made perfectly, just the way they are.
God sees you. And you are worth so much to Him.
STEP #3: ORATIO / PRAY
"Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
How do I see myself? How does God see me?
God loves me unconditionally. Do I believe it?
How can I see myself as God sees me?
STEP #4: CONTEMPLATIO / CONTEMPLATE
"I am worth more than many sparrows."
"God loves me."
"Jesus died for me."
FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAY...
Take five minutes and look in the mirror. Try to see yourself as God sees you. Know that you are His beloved child.
